The biggest limitation

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in 2021 enrolled 100 adults aged 50–85 with age-associated memory impairment.

Participants received either placebo or 500 mg/day of Citicoline for 12 weeks. Citicoline was associated with improvement in selected episodic-memory and composite memory outcomes.

That is meaningful human evidence, but the study does not demonstrate that Citicoline reliably enhances memory in every healthy person.

A randomized study involving 75 healthy adolescent males evaluated Citicoline at 250 mg or 500 mg/day for 28 days. Improvements were reported on selected measures of attention and psychomotor performance.

Have Citicoline and Alpha-GPC Been Compared Head-to-Head?

Yes—but the direct comparisons do not answer the main question most healthy nootropic users have.

Older trials compared the compounds in people with dementia or vascular cognitive disorders.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled three randomized trials involving 358 people with dementia disorders.

Alpha-GPC produced a statistically favorable result on one global geriatric assessment, but the review did not establish a simple superiority for all cognitive outcomes.

The findings also came from an older prescription-use population rather than young, healthy intermittent supplement users.
