A substance can make someone feel more awake without restoring all of the cognitive functions impaired by sleep deprivation. Sleep remains important for attention, memory encoding and subsequent memory consolidation.
The rational role of a study supplement is therefore as an optional adjunct to adequate sleep, nutrition and effective learning techniques — not as a replacement for them.

Caffeine
Caffeine remains the most defensible acute study aid on this list when the goal is alertness and attention.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis included 31 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials with 1,455 healthy adults.
Caffeine significantly improved both attention accuracy and reaction time. Higher doses produced larger reaction-time effects in the pooled analysis, but accuracy did not simply improve indefinitely as dose increased.
That distinction matters: more caffeine is not automatically better cognitive performance.
Caffeine can also cause anxiety, tremor, palpitations, gastrointestinal symptoms and sleep disruption. Even 100 mg can affect sleep in susceptible adults when consumed close to bedtime.

L-theanine is an amino acid naturally present in tea and is widely used as part of caffeine-plus-theanine study combinations.
The important 2026 update is that L-theanine should no longer be described only as a caffeine partner.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 randomized trials involving 1,168 participants found that a single 200 mg dose taken 30–60 minutes before cognitive testing significantly improved choice reaction time.
That supports a meaningful acute attention signal from L-theanine itself.
The analysis did not establish broad enhancement across every cognitive or emotional outcome. Anxiety findings were inconsistent and the acute stress effect was modest.

What About Caffeine + L-Theanine?
The combination remains reasonable and has randomized human evidence for selected attention and task-switching outcomes.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis also found small-to-moderate differences favoring caffeine plus L-theanine for selected cognitive outcomes.
However, there is no universally proven caffeine-to-theanine ratio. The popular 1:2 or 2:1 rules should not be presented as mandatory evidence-based formulas.
L-theanine also does not eliminate caffeine-related insomnia, anxiety, tolerance or cardiovascular symptoms.
Bacopa Monnieri
Bacopa is more relevant to students interested in longer-term memory outcomes than to someone looking for immediate alertness.
A systematic review of randomized controlled trials in adults without dementia identified six eligible studies. All lasted approximately 12 weeks and evaluated standardized Bacopa preparations.
The clearest positive pattern involved selected memory outcomes, particularly free recall.
That does not establish that every Bacopa preparation produces identical effects or that Bacopa broadly improves every cognitive domain.

Taking Bacopa for the first time on the morning of an exam is not supported by the research model used in the major controlled trials.
Creatine Monohydrate
Creatine is best known for exercise and muscle performance, but the brain also depends on cellular energy systems involving creatine and phosphocreatine.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 16 randomized controlled trials involving 492 adults.
Creatine supplementation produced a significant positive effect on memory. The authors rated the certainty of the memory evidence as moderate.
The analysis also reported positive signals for attention time and processing speed, but evidence certainty for those outcomes was low.
Creatine therefore deserves a slightly stronger position than the older version of this page gave it, but it should still not be described as a universal cognitive enhancer or an acute study stimulant.

Citicoline
Citicoline, also called CDP-choline, provides choline and cytidine and participates in phospholipid metabolism.
One randomized controlled study included 75 healthy adolescent males who received placebo or 250–500 mg of citicoline for 28 days.
The citicoline groups showed improvements in selected measures of attention and psychomotor speed.
That study is relevant to a student-focused guide, but it should be interpreted cautiously. It was relatively small and included investigators affiliated with the citicoline manufacturer.
Another controlled trial reported memory benefits after 12 weeks of 500 mg/day in older adults with age-associated memory impairment, which demonstrates that citicoline has human cognitive research but does not directly establish benefits for healthy university students.

Rhodiola Rosea
Rhodiola is frequently marketed to students for “mental endurance,” but its more defensible research context is fatigue rather than memory or learning.
A systematic review of 11 controlled trials found that some studies reported benefits for physical or mental fatigue, but the overall research was contradictory and affected by important methodological limitations.
Rhodiola should therefore be treated as an experimental fatigue-oriented option rather than a proven academic-performance supplement.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom
Lion’s Mane is widely marketed using terms such as neuroplasticity, nerve growth and brain regeneration.
Laboratory mechanisms involving nerve-growth-related pathways are scientifically interesting, but they do not establish that a student taking Lion’s Mane will learn faster or perform better on an examination.
A randomized pilot study examined 1.8 g of Lion’s Mane in 41 healthy adults aged 18–45.
Participants performed faster on one Stroop-task measure after an acute dose, but the trial was small and produced several null findings. The investigators appropriately called for larger studies.
Lion’s Mane therefore remains an experimental cognitive ingredient, not a leading evidence-based study supplement.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
EPA and DHA are nutritionally important fatty acids, and DHA is an important structural component of nervous-system cell membranes.
That biological importance should not be translated into a claim that taking fish oil before a study session improves memory or examination performance.
A meta-analysis of randomized trials found no general improvement across cognitive-performance measures in the overall population, although a possible short-term memory signal appeared among participants with low baseline omega-3 status.
Omega-3 therefore belongs primarily in the nutritional adequacy category rather than the acute nootropic category.
What About Ginkgo Biloba?
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo has one of the longest histories in cognitive-supplement marketing, but its reputation is stronger than the evidence for healthy students.
Current NCCIH guidance states that it remains uncertain whether Ginkgo affects cognitive performance in healthy people and that much of the research in this area is low quality.

Choose one clearly defined outcome, test the simplest reasonable intervention and change one major variable at a time. If you introduce five supplements simultaneously, you lose much of your ability to identify benefit, adverse effects or interactions.
For acute attention, caffeine alone or caffeine plus L-theanine may be sufficient for someone who already knows that caffeine is well tolerated.
